Is It Time To Install A New Air Conditioner Already?
Replacing your HVAC System is a significant investment, but a good one for your home. Deciding whether your existing AC unit is ready for replacement or does it have a few years left can be a hard decision. You do not want to risk it breaking down on the next 100 degree day, but also do not want to spend money you do not have to.
Here are a few things to consider when trying to determine when the right time to replace your existing air conditioner.
- Your air conditioner is at least ten years old. The average air conditioner tends to last 10 to 15 years. As the unit ages repairs can get expensive and most of the times it makes economic sense to replace your existing unit when it is at the end of its life expectancy.
- Your air conditioner is not energy-efficient. Older air conditioners have poor SEER ratings, which means it will cost you more to operate it, compared to some of the newer models.
- Your air conditioner breaks down several times a year. If you are making regular service calls during the summer replacing the unit will help you save on the repair fees.
- Your air conditioner still uses Freon-22. All air conditioners will be freon-free by 2020. Freon is extremely expensive to purchase, and if your unit uses it, you will eventually have to replace it to switch to Puron.
